Cigarette casket

Selected because it is such a wonderfully bizarre object and we would like to find out more about its manufacturer, Cromwells Ltd of Dudley Port.

Cigarette casket
Case number - PHSL : 147
A casket with a hinged rectangular lid, four integral feet and intricate moulded decoration. It is most likely that this compression moulded phenol formaldehyde box was designed for storing cigarettes in the 1930s or 1940s.

Cigarette casket PHSL : 147 We think this was for storing cigarettes but it looks a bit like a casket for ashes. We want to know who designed it and when. We would also like to know more about the manufacturer, Cromwells. Check out the case on teh 10 Most Wanted website: http://10most.org.uk/artefact/cigarette-casket.

Ian Ralph says: 'I have a small 5" scalloped Bakelite trinket tray by Cromwell's Ltd which also says TRADE MARK Cromware Dudley Port England. That's all I can offer on this one but it might encourage further contributions.' It would indeed be great to hear from others who can add information about Cromwell's. Is it going to link up with the Dudley handheld vacuum cleaner perhaps?
